Our Story
John, Jessica, & Bear Bear
At Cherry Bluff Orchard we have been blessed to have had the support from our family these past 15 years. From financial investing to planting and pruning, hauling and thinning, watering and fertilizing, and even picking cherries, we wouldn't be where we are today without their support. We are especially grateful to the Lubbesmeyer siblings for their continued dedication to our efforts.
We are hopeful that our venture of looking at new ways to keep Cherry Bluff Orchard open will help our farm flourish for years to come.

Cherry Bluff
In the spring of 2009, Cherry Bluff Orchard was established by John and Jessica up in the hills of Tieton, Washington, just outside of Naches. Originally around 3,400 trees were planted. This endeavor included treating soil, a new irrigation system, and digging and backfilling 3,400 holes.
The trees grew exceptionally well for two growing seasons, but in the winter of 2010, the region experienced a record-breaking freeze that lasted long enough to kill 1/3 of the trees. In the spring of 2012 replacement trees were planted.

Today Cherry Bluff Orchard has just over 3,500 trees producing quality sweetheart cherries.
Beginnings
Upon graduating from WSU with a construction management degree, John immediately began building homes in the Puget Sound area. After 12+ years of building, fate, or a chance, led him to an existing cherry orchard opportunity in Wenatchee, Washington. A family-owned orchard was in serious decline, so after researching the business and how it could be successfully run, John jumped in and bought 50% of the orchard from the family. Running a successful orchard in the 90's came down to having the right location, producing good fruit, and the willingness to work consistently hard to properly take care of the trees. In those days warehouses typically did not have their own orchards and fruit to sell, so the small farmer wasn’t competing against them as much as they are today. From 1995 to 2003 John ran a successful orchard. The family that he originally bought the orchard from, recognized how good things were going, so when they offered to buy him out, he accepted. The next 6 to 7 years were spent building homes until the financial crisis of 2008. When the opportunity presented itself to purchase a property that housed declining apple trees, John knew he couldn't pass it up. Along with encouragement from his family he established Cherry Bluff Orchard in 2009.
Small Farm Hurdles
This year the market was flooded when our window to pick opened. There were too many large growers that essentially squeezed the small grower out. We wound up being forced to let the crop hang and not be harvested. When we went into the harvest week, we were told by others in the industry that this was one of our best crops.
